In fact, studies show that bilingual people are more flexible thinkers. This can help with problem-solving and understanding people from many different cultural backgrounds! Some studies even show that being bilingual can delay the effects of Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
The ESL English Support Program at Greendale Schools provides various types of support to students who are learning English. Many times, students' spoken English is very fluent, but they may still need support in English reading and writing. Other students may need support in developing academic English to help them be successful in their K-12 education, and beyond! At Greendale Schools, we focus on supporting students in their regular classroom as much as possible. Types of support include:

- ESL teacher co-teaching with students' regular classroom teacher
- ESL teacher collaborating and coaching the students' regular classroom teacher on best practices for English learners
- Extra support and conferring in the regular classroom
- Short, small group lessons in reading, writing, and vocabulary
- Annual testing of English learners to ensure that their English listening, speaking, reading and writing is improving each year
- Monitoring students for 2 years after exiting the ESL program to ensure they are successful without ESL support
